What US home care nurses can learn & the old ‘black bag’: A conversation

Care in the home in the United States lags behind other countries because of the lack of access to healthcare, according to Susan Hinck,   PhD, president of the International Home Care Nurses Organization,   which represents hundreds of nurses and close to 40 countries, and   Marilyn Harris, RN, a board member. However, the US is keeping pace internationally with the hospital-at-home program. And the growing use of technology in the home, including ambient listening, is serving nurses well, they told McKnight’s Home Care in a Newsmakers podcast. Reminiscing on home care nursing of yore, Harris, who began her nursing career in 1960, reflected on the contents of the “black bag” she used to bring into the home. Among them: a 3 oz. bottle of alcohol, a brush and orange stick to clean her fingernails, and hypodermic syringes.
